SoundCloud Treasures-'TrapHouse Rock', a mixtape by Kids These Days
Ever stumbled across a piece of music that just blew your mind? The first time I listened to the intro, I had goosebumps. Booming instrumentation provided the soundtrack for this innovative band from Chicago to have a unique jumping off point on the scene.
Drill music was dominating the region, so to hear people like Chance the Rapper, Jamila Woods, & Kids These Days bring something new to the table was interesting. The album released in 2012, bounces around from soul inspired, to rock, to hip-hop, to punk. ‘Don’t Harsh My Mellow’ could have easily been a Nirvana song in 1994. The band merged worlds, creating something totally new, fresh, and in retrospect, timeless.
It’s sad to hear bands break up, especially when they have potential to go further. From the band emerged Vic Mensa, a rapper that I personally love because he is so versatile but is hard to place in certain areas because he really can do it all. Nico Segal, better known as Donnie Trumpet, has worked on many projects with Chance and made a name for himself as well.
As always, the beauty of the internet is that our favorite songs and projects live on, even if the people who make them doesn’t.
Thanks, SoundCloud.
