'Boomerang', Sevyn Streeter

I love an ode. Released in 2015, Sevyn & Hit-Boy found a perfect way to show love to one of our favorite movies from the 90s. “Love should have brought your ass home” sings Streeter over synths paid homage to the film ‘Boomerang’. Both the Toni Braxton song from the soundtrack and a Halle Barry line inspired the hook of the song.

It’s sassy, smart, and witty. Sevyn floats over the beat, talking cash about the man that frankly needs to get it together. Released on the EP ‘Shoulda Been There Pt.1’, it had an entire story of love in turmoil, inconsistent men, and bouncing back. We love a bounce back bop.

Enjoy.

'Skeletons', Travis Scott

Nothing tops Spotify dropping random songs on shuffle and throwing my world into disarray. I don’t remember how I missed ‘Astroworld’ as a whole. Of course, ‘Sicko Mode’ was a knocker but I think I was distracted by the Wyoming drops from GOOD Music that summer. This song hit me like a ton of bricks.

Scott has a unique sound, one of the reasons he’s set himself a part from his peers. The song features Pharrell Williams, The Weekend, & Tame Impala (who also produced the song). The medium that Scott finds between rock, pop, punk, & hip-hop is such an interesting space. You can’t help but to be intrigued. This song is a wild ride, and worth the 2:26 minute trip.

'The Earth Is Flat', Jade Novah

Join me on this ride if you’re not scared of heights, keep on floating.

‘All Blue’ released in 2018 by songstress Jade Novah, was a journey of the carefree black girl. We heard her personality, her sensibilities, and conspiracy theories. ‘Flat’ is a haunting yet melodic composition by Devin Johnson. We hear talking about life on Pluto and things ‘they’ don’t want us to know. The album is full of songs just as imaginative and other worldly.

If you haven’t check her out, and get some zen in ya system.

Enjoy.

SoundCloud Treasures-'TrapHouse Rock', a mixtape by Kids These Days

Ever stumbled across a piece of music that just blew your mind? The first time I listened to the intro, I had goosebumps. Booming instrumentation provided the soundtrack for this innovative band from Chicago to have a unique jumping off point on the scene.

Drill music was dominating the region, so to hear people like Chance the Rapper, Jamila Woods, & Kids These Days bring something new to the table was interesting. The album released in 2012, bounces around from soul inspired, to rock, to hip-hop, to punk. ‘Don’t Harsh My Mellow’ could have easily been a Nirvana song in 1994. The band merged worlds, creating something totally new, fresh, and in retrospect, timeless.

It’s sad to hear bands break up, especially when they have potential to go further. From the band emerged Vic Mensa, a rapper that I personally love because he is so versatile but is hard to place in certain areas because he really can do it all. Nico Segal, better known as Donnie Trumpet, has worked on many projects with Chance and made a name for himself as well.

As always, the beauty of the internet is that our favorite songs and projects live on, even if the people who make them doesn’t.

Thanks, SoundCloud.

Visual, Visual-'Whoa', Snoh Aalegra Starring Michael B. Jordan

Snoh Aalegra’s music sounds like how love feels. Smooth, pretty, and sensual. ‘I Want You Around’ was the lead single for her latest album ‘Ugh, those feels again’ and I thought that video starring A$AP Twelvyy was a treat to watch. BUT THIS HERE?!

Directed by NO SCHOOL & Izabelle P. Wilson (I.P.W), ‘Whoa’, was released today and starring everybody’s boyfriend, Michael Bae Jordan. I left a comment on YouTube saying “This is the cutest shit I’ve ever seen”, and I mean it. The song is an ode to the vibes we all feel with our significant others.

“Don’t wanna leave, I just wanna be here by your side. You make me feel and believe that we’re in paradise. Cause I don’t feel the ground”

The video showcases the leading duo in seemingly regular ‘chillin with bae’ like situations but everything is magnified in a fantasy-like world. Snoh is beautiful as always, singing and drapped in beautiful colors and amazing lighting.

My personal favorite scene is Snoh brushing his hair in the correct direction because that detail is VERY important.

So send bae that text, invite them over for the weekend, play this cute shit and get some love.

Enjoy.

New Music Friday-‘Don’t Waste My Time’, Usher feat. Ella Mai

We love to see a good R&B collab, especially by our legends. The supreme team of Jermaine Dupri, Bryan Michael Cox, and Usher linked up with Ella Mai to bring us a timely cuddle season anthem. ‘Don’t Waste My Time’ opens with Usher giving his signature vocals, still sounding like 97. Ella Mai floats over the song complimenting the beat and holding her own for a nice duet. Let’s hope this is a teaser from more to come from Usher in the upcoming year. It’s definitely over due.

YouTube Gems-'La La La', Lil Wayne

I miss Limewire. Even though it gave my computer all the STDs, it brought me so much joy. Mixtape Weezy in 07-09 was a thing of legend and we were blessed with some amazing music that is still floating around the internet. Not to be confused with ‘La La’ from Tha Carter III, this song featured my favorite version of Wayne, personable.

Can I kick my story to ya’ll? My glory in God, my faith in my flow. I pray that I go where no other rapper has and when you’re rapping as vivid as I, your limit is the sky. So I study B.I, I bang Tupac. I hum Aaliyah, and Soulja Slim was a leader. Who am I not to follow greatness?

'Part of the List', Ne-Yo

I’m researching a bit for my next Def Jam Fan Fic story (check that out, btw) and stumbled on a compilation of love songs from artists on the label. Ne-Yo released the album ‘Year of the Gentleman’ in 2008 and my lil teenage heart fluttered. It was full of gems that we expected from him. ‘Part of the List’ made me shed tears missing the boyfriend I never had and that is definitely a sign of great songwriting. If you’ve never heard it, check it out and get in your feels.
